This collection highlights the artwork of Wallace MacMahon Mitchell covering 1937-1974 and features some photographs of Mitchell. Wallace MacMahon Mitchell was born in Detroit in 1911. He studied under Zoltan Sepeshy (1934-1935) and returned to Cranbrook as a painting instructor (1936-1954). During this time, he also taught Arts and Crafts at Cranbrook School (1944-1947). Mitchell became registrar of the Art Academy between 1944-1956, then Director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art Museum from 1956 to 1970, when he became President of the Cranbrook Academy of Art until 1977.
